Not a Hint

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” (Eph 5:3 NIV)

While Paul is speaking to the church of Ephesus, he very easily could have been talking to any modern American church. Did you notice how forcefully Paul was speaking? He told them that not even a hint should be found among you! Think about that, when you were a kid did you ever sneak a snack you shouldn’t have, and try to hide it but you missed the smallest detail that gave you away?

Right now I am in the midst of reading a great book on this topic called Every Man’s Battle.  And one of the points they make is that when regarding sexual immorality, is that sexual immorality can take many forms. It can be as much as a lingering gaze, or any form of entertainment that implants visuals or alludes to sexual situations that can invade your thoughts later. He goes on to speak about any other kind of impurity, and greed. These are all things that take root in our heart. If you are not seeking God fully, or have a true grasp on the gospel and the implications it makes in your daily walk with Christ, it becomes easy for that hint to become a larger piece of the puzzle.

Paul makes sure to emphasize the point that these behaviors are improper for God’s holy people. Remember that in 1 Peter 2:9 that we are now referred to as a holy priesthood, and by being such we must keep ourselves from being undefiled. It is no easy task when the society we live in takes lightly the issues of pre-marital sex, lust and all other forms of sexual immorality.
